Former Sri Lanka captain Mahela Jayawardene turns 44 today. Mahela played 149 Tests, 448 ODIs and 55 T20Is for his country, becoming Sri Lanka’s most capped player.
One of Sri Lanka’s most prolific batsmen and finest captains, Mahela is currently a succesful cricket coach, coaching Indian Premier League team Mumbai Indians to 3 IPL titles.
Under Jayawadene’s captaincy, Sri Lanka shed their hesitant approach, winning Tests in England and New Zealand. Known as the ‘Tactician’, Mahela lead Sri Lanka to the 2007 World Cup final – his greatest achievement as skipper.
