On this day, In 2000, Sri Lankan legend Kumar Sangakkara made his debut for Sri Lanka in ODIs.
Sangakkara’s tireless efforts in domestic cricket rewarded him with a place in the ODI squad at the age of only 22. In July 2000, in a match in Singer Triangular series in Galle against Pakistan he played his first ODI.
Chasing a modest target of 164, Sangakkara replaced Mahela Jayawardene on crease and was instrumental in steadying the ship with Marvan Atapattu. Sangakkara scored 35 from 55 balls before getting run out. Sri Lanka went on to win the game by 5 wickets.
Sanga made his Test debut later in the month in the series against South Africa.
